Ms. Morris' Classroom Library

A list of some of my favorite Children's books. These are books that I have in my personal classroom library or books I would like to have.

Amazing Grace

Amazing Grace - Mary Hoffman, Caroline Binch

Amazing Grace by Caroline Binch is a book about a young girl named Grace. She loves stories, whether they're from books, movies, or the kind her grandmother tells. Grace gets a chance to play a part in Peter Pan, and she knows exactly who she wants to be.

Guided Reading: Level L

Classroom Activities:

Assign roles and have students act out this book, or complete a character study using the characters in the story.

Duck! Rabbit!

Duck! Rabbit! - Amy Krouse Rosenthal, Tom Lichtenheld

Duck! Rabbit! by Tom Litchtenheld is a story about how there can be two different views on something, yet both can be right. I love this book, because it allows students to see how and why to end an argument, and to try and see the other person's side.

Guided Reading Level: J

Classroom Activities:

Have students write an opinion piece about whether it is a duck or a rabbit. Have
them include supporting details in their writing.
Discuss how sometimes there is more than one way to see the world.
Both characters in this story are correct because of the optical illusion presented in
the illustrations. This would emphasize that two people can see things differently
and that there is not always just one right answer.

Chicka Chicka Boom Boom

Chicka Chicka Boom Boom - Bill Martin Jr., John Archambault, Lois Ehlert

Chicka Chicka Boom Boom by Bill Martin Jr. is a book about the letters in the alphabet racing each other up the coconut tree. This is a great novel for preschoolers and kindergarten.

Guided Reading Level: L

Classroom Activities: One of my favorite activities to use alongside Chicka Chicka Boom Boom: Matching Upper and Lowercase Letters together (https://jugglingwithkids.com/2013/09/chika-chika-boom-boom-alphabet-matching.html)

Pete the Cat: Rocking in My School Shoes

Pete the Cat: Rocking in My School Shoes - Eric Litwin, James Dean

Pete the Cat: Rocking in My School Shoes written by Eric Litwin is one of the many books in the Pete the Cat collection. In this novel, Pete discovers the library, the lunch room, the playground, and lots of other cool places at school. And no matter where he goes, Pete never stops moving and grooving and singing his song, because "it's all good".

Guided Reading Level: K

Classroom Activity: After reading the book to the class, the teacher can lead a

discussion about new experiences and going to new places for the first time. Talk about how children feel when they go to new places. Then, discuss how Pete handles each new area he encounters at school. Review each of the places at school that Pete visits (library, lunchroom, play ground) and discuss additional places at school where children might go (gym, art room, music room, office etc.). Follow up the sitting and listening time with an activity that gets children walking, playing, and/or rocking in their school shoes.
